The Coronavirus Lockdown’s Impact on Tigers

The Tiger needs our help..

The tiger is truly a magnificent and ferocious creature. It has a need to be protected against hunters , poacher.loss of its habitat and now as of what reports show, even the coronavirus. It is our job to fulfill this need and help these integral beasts in every way we can.
The quiet reserves has led to an increase in the tiger population tiger. This is great news ,however hunters and poachers looking at this opportunity and for subsistence have started poaching them. Reports claim tiger poaching has multiplied in India.
As the International Tiger Day was being observed on Wednesday, the Indian government said in a report that the overall tiger population in the country was estimated at two thousand nine hundred and sixty seven .It is still unknown how poaching rates increased during the lockdown despite the consistent efforts made by law enforcement agencies .
It is important to form corridors of territorial forests with extended agricultural fields to save the animals. As of now, only forests are patrolled, not the agricultural fields, which leads to open ground for poachers. Due to limited areas around territorial forests the wild animals come face to face with domestic animals. These domestic animals may in-turn become carriers of zoonotic diseases!
Although India boasts nearly three thousand tigers across the length and breadth of its forests, the country has witnessed a major spike in poaching during the lockdown period. A report showed that eighty eight poaching incidents have been reported in the post lockdown period from the end of March to May, almost double the number reported during the six weeks before lockdown! Thus one impact of covid on the tigers has been an increase in poaching.
India’s Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change have advised wildlife wardens in all states with tigers to restrict the movement of people into national parks, sanctuaries and reserves. Tigers must also be observed for respiratory symptoms, such as nasal discharge, coughing or labored breathing, the authority said. This was said after a tigress tested positive for COVID-19 at New York’s Bronx Zoo in April. It is beleived is believed to have contracted the virus from a caretaker who was asymptomatic at the time. This left everyone baffled. No one thought a tiger could contract this virus. It has become crucial to maintain distance as there is a potential virus threat to India’s 50 tiger reserves. This is the second threat to this vulnerable species.
Forests face an increased risk of being cut down and degraded as a result of the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, a senior U.N. official said .These animals now face a loss of habitat greater than ever before, the lockdown may also has also led to a baby boom which while lead to people cutting trees as man’s demand grows .This is the third threat.
The chief executive officer of WWF-India, Ravi Singh said that if poaching of small animals remains unchecked it will lead to depletion of a prey base for big cats like tigers and leopards and a depletion of the ecosystems. This in turn will lead to higher incidences of human-wildlife conflicts and will undermine the significant successes that India has achieved in the field of wildlife conservation. This is the fourth threat and there are many more.
India has 25% of the world’s tiger habitat, with 50 designated tiger reserves, but shelters 75% of the global tiger population. Let us do what we can to save this magnificent beasts from extinction!
